Why Volunteer?

  • Gain Real-World Experience: Work with local nonprofits and community organizations to explore careers, practice teamwork, and discover what it’s like to make a real impact.
  • Build Your Resume: Show colleges and employers that you take initiative. Volunteering demonstrates leadership, responsibility, and a commitment to your community, qualities that stand out.
  • Learn New Skills: Every volunteer role is a chance to grow. You’ll develop communication, organization, and problem-solving skills that translate to any future job or academic path.
  • Explore Your Interests: Try something new! Volunteering lets you “test drive” different roles or causes to see what you enjoy most.
  • Connect and Network: Meet community leaders, mentors, and peers who share your passion for service, some of whom may become references or future colleagues.
  • Build Career Pathways: Nonprofits employ thousands of people across every sector. Volunteering gives you valuable experience and connections that could lead to future opportunities.
  • Prepare for College: Many college applications value volunteer service. Your hours and experiences can give you a competitive edge, and plenty to write about in your essays.
  • Feel Great About Giving Back: There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the difference you make. Every hour you volunteer helps create stronger, more resilient communities.

Be Recognized for Your Service

Each year, CVNL honors outstanding youth volunteers through the Heart Awards, celebrating middle and high school students who demonstrate exceptional leadership and commitment to community service. Up to five Youth Volunteers of the Year are recognized annually in Marin, Sonoma, and Napa counties, each receiving a $1,000 award for their nonprofit.
