Fairfield PAL Teen Center is looking for volunteers who can help teens learn the game of pool in a fun, patient, and welcoming way.
This is a great fit for someone who enjoys billiards, knows the basics, and can help teens slow down, line up a shot, think ahead, and build confidence one turn at a time.
You do not need to be a tournament-level player. You just need to be dependable, encouraging, and willing to help teens learn the game with good sportsmanship and respect.
What Volunteers Will Do
Volunteers may help teens:
Learn basic pool rules and table etiquette
Understand cue safety and respectful use of equipment
Practice aiming, stance, grip, and smooth shots
Learn how to call a shot and think one move ahead
Play beginner-friendly games and challenges
Understand strategy without making it too complicated
Keep games fair, friendly, and fun
Welcome newer players who may feel nervous trying
Encourage patience, focus, and good sportsmanship
Help organize mini-tournaments or casual challenge nights
Who We’re Looking For
We are looking for volunteers who are:
Comfortable working with teens
Patient with beginners
Calm, friendly, and encouraging
Able to explain things clearly
Good at modeling respect and table etiquette
Willing to help teens learn without making them feel embarrassed
Interested in using recreation to build confidence, focus, and connection
This opportunity is a great fit for pool players, retirees, parents, college students, veterans, service members, community members, or anyone who enjoys the game and wants to give teens a positive place to learn.
Why It Matters
At PAL, billiards is more than a game at the table.
It teaches patience. Focus. Self-control. Strategy. How to win without bragging and lose without quitting.
A teen who learns to slow down before a shot is also practicing how to slow down before a choice. A volunteer can turn a casual game into a quiet moment of coaching, connection, and confidence.
Sometimes all it takes is someone standing beside them saying, “Take your time. Look at the angle. You’ve got it.”
Volunteer Role Available
Volunteer Billiards Coach
Help teens learn pool basics, practice skills, understand strategy, care for equipment, and enjoy the game in a safe and respectful way.
Volunteers may also help with casual tournaments, pool challenges, or drop-in recreation time.
Time Commitment
We are looking for volunteers who can help during after-school hours, special events, or scheduled billiards activities. A regular weekly commitment is helpful, but we are happy to discuss availability.
Volunteer Requirements
Fairfield PAL Teen Center is a youth-serving organization. All volunteers must complete PAL’s volunteer process before working with students.
Requirements include:
Volunteer application
DOJ background check
Mandated reporter training
Compliance with AB 506 requirements for youth-serving organizations
All required screening costs are covered by the program.
Best Fit For Someone Who Says:
“I can teach someone without rushing them.”
“I know pool is about more than just making the shot.”
“I like helping teens build confidence.”
“I can keep the game fun, fair, and respectful.”
“I’m good at saying, ‘Try it one more time.’”
