Dog Walkers Needed!

We are looking for dog walkers at our Santa Rosa shelter (near Sebastopol)! You don't need to be a professional dog walker, but some experience with different types of dogs is extremely helpful.

The Humane Society of Sonoma County has an incredible team of volunteers, who walk and care for our shelter dogs daily. The attention and walks our volunteers give to our dogs helps the dogs develop trust and a sense of comfort and safety while they are with us, which increases their adoptability.

The Canine Care Volunteer position at HSSC is crucial to the health and well-being of our canine population. Dog walkers exercise, socialize, and offer enrichment in the form of walks, play, play groups, visiting, andother activities for the dogs.Volunteers may be participating in activities on campus including dog play groups and K9 Exploratorium. This position requires a moderate amount of physical ability and takes place in all weather conditions. We have loads of fun with our dogs, while maintaining healthy boundaries around desired behaviors.Adoptability is key,so we use progressive and positive reinforcement methods to build trust and cultivate willingness. Our trainers are terrific role models who are happy to share their wealth of knowledge.

We ask that our volunteers commit to a minimum of 2 hours/ week, for 6 months. We rely on our dogwalkers greatly, and it's important that we can count on you to be able to come for shifts you are scheduled for.

We need dog walkers for all shifts, especially Mondays! We always need the most help between 7am and 9am (there is some flexibility here, but the shift needs to begin before 7:45am, as we need to get the dogs out first thing in the morning), and the 4pm to 6pm shift, as it's their last potty break.

Please indicate what times you are available on the application.

If you are interested in becoming a dog walker with the Humane Society of Sonoma County, please complete the application at the link below. It is very helpful for us to know your history with dogs, so please provide as much detail as possible in the comment sections.

Once we have your application, you will be invited to a General Orientation for New Volunteers (which is usually done on Zoom). Once you have attended a general orientation you will be connected with our Canine Behavior and Training Team, to arrange a time to come in for a training/ shelter orientation.
