Volunteer: ASVAB / Trades Math in 30 Days Program

This summer, do more than just show up somewhere. Show up where you can help a teen feel more ready for what coASVAB / Trades Math in 30 Days Program

Fairfield PAL Teen Center

Fairfield PAL Teen Center is looking for patient, encouraging volunteers to help teens build the math skills they need for future career pathways, trade programs, and ASVAB preparation.

This is not about being a perfect math teacher. It is about being the kind of adult who can sit next to a teen, slow the problem down, explain it one more way, and help them realize, “Okay… I can actually do this.”

Our new ASVAB / Trades Math in 30 Days program will use a structured practice guide that includes skill-building ASVAB math exercises, two full-length practice tests, answer explanations, and topics such as whole numbers, fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, factoring, integers, and order of operations.

What Volunteers Will Do

Volunteers will help students practice and strengthen basic math skills connected to ASVAB readiness, trades programs, apprenticeships, and real-world problem solving.

A volunteer may help students:

Work through daily math practice pages
Review missed problems and understand where they got stuck
Practice test-taking strategies
Build confidence with fractions, decimals, percentages, basic algebra, measurement, and word problems
Prepare for practice tests
Stay encouraged when math feels frustrating
Connect math skills to real career goals
Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for volunteers who are:

Comfortable with basic math through pre-algebra/algebra concepts
Patient, kind, and able to explain things clearly
Encouraging with teens who may feel nervous or behind in math
Dependable and willing to show up consistently
Interested in helping students explore future opportunities in trades, career pathways, or ASVAB-related goals
Able to create a calm, respectful learning space

You do not need to be a credentialed teacher. Retired teachers, college students, tutors, engineers, trades professionals, military-connected adults, parents, and community members who enjoy helping teens learn are all welcome to apply.

Time Commitment

We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one regular session per week during the program. Scheduling can be discussed based on volunteer availability and program needs.

Why It Matters

For some teens, math is the thing standing between them and a next step they really want.

A higher score can open doors. A better understanding of fractions, decimals, or word problems can make a student feel more ready for a test, a trade program, a job application, or a future they are just beginning to picture.

At PAL, volunteers do more than help with worksheets. They help teens build confidence, practice persistence, and see that they are capable of more than they thought.

Volunteer Requirements

Fairfield PAL Teen Center is a youth-serving organization. All volunteers must complete PAL’s volunteer process before working with students.

Requirements include:

Volunteer application
DOJ background check
Mandated reporter training
Compliance with AB 506 requirements for youth-serving organizations

All required screening costs are covered by the program.

Best Fit For Someone Who Says:

“I’m good at breaking things down.”

“I don’t mind explaining it a different way.”

“I want to help teens feel less afraid of math.”

“I believe one caring adult can make a big difference.”

A good volunteer helps set the tone. They keep the game fair. They help teens compete without crossing the line. They turn arguments into learning moments and wins into confidence.

Sometimes the most important thing a teen hears all day is, “Run it back. You’ve got this.”

Volunteer Coach
Help lead drills, support players, teach fundamentals, and encourage teamwork.

Volunteer Scorekeeper

Volunteers can help in one role or a mix of roles, depending on comfort level and program needs.

You do not need to be a tournament-level player. You just need to be dependable, encouraging, and willing to help teens learn the game with good sportsmanship and respect.

What Volunteers Will Do

Volunteers may help teens:

Learn basic pool rules and table etiquette
Understand cue safety and respectful use of equipment
Practice aiming, stance, grip, and smooth shots
Learn how to call a shot and think one move ahead
Play beginner-friendly games and challenges
Understand strategy without making it too complicated
Keep games fair, friendly, and fun
Welcome newer players who may feel nervous trying
Encourage patience, focus, and good sportsmanship
Help organize mini-tournaments or casual challenge nights
Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for volunteers who are:

Comfortable working with teens
Patient with beginners
Calm, friendly, and encouraging

Why It Matters

At PAL, billiards is more than a game at the table.

It teaches patience. Focus. Self-control. Strategy. How to win without bragging and lose without quitting.

A teen who learns to slow down before a shot is also practicing how to slow down before a choice. A volunteer can turn a casual game into a quiet moment of coaching, connection, and confidence.

Sometimes all it takes is someone standing beside them saying, “Take your time. Look at the angle. You’ve got it.”
