Volunteer Wheels began operations in 1975. That first year the service scheduled 1,660 rides to over 270 elderly and disabled individuals, providing transportation from their homes to medical appointments. Today Volunteer Wheels operates the ADA paratransit service for Sonoma County Transit with a staff of paid and volunteer drivers. Volunteer Wheels provides more than 30,000 rides per year and serves over 3,300 people with a small fleet of sedans, generally driven by our volunteers, as well as wheelchair lift vehicles operated by our staff. | ||
Volunteer Wheels provides rides seven days a week, taking people to medical appointments, senior centers, shopping, visits to loved ones, or any location within our service area. Rides are provided between the County's incorporated cities, as well as within the cities of Rohnert Park, Cotati, Sebastopol, and Windsor. Rides are also provided in Sonoma Valley, Guerneville and the Monte Rio area. Volunteer Wheels is funded through our service contract with Sonoma County Transit and contributions from the community. This is perhaps the Volunteer Center's most visible program and the one for which we are best known. Volunteer Wheels provides elderly and disabled residents and visitors in Sonoma County with the opportunity to live with a degree of independence they could not otherwise achieve.
